Duolingo Learn My Language – Pushing for positive change.
Insight
Idea
With English being a global language, English speakers often do not see the need to learn another language. While in some cases the reason for this is certainly plain laziness, in others it’s a more serious issue: native English speakers who think that foreigners should speak “their“ language – and not the other way around – is a form of xenophobia.
Turning Duolingo into a platform where language learners can push each other to learn their language for the cause of fighting xenophobia.
Campaign
Details
Language learners on Duolingo will get the chance to compose a motivational note in their native language after finishing their daily lessons. Using the hashtag #learnmylanguage these notes will be sent as push notifications to other learning this language. This way, #learnmylanguage will turn from an expression used by English natives who demand others learn “their” language, into an expression that generates mutual motivation to learn each other’s language.
